What's good: Under the expert direction of casual-gaming giant PopCap Games, Bookworm - one of the best loved word games of all time - made its way to the iPhone and iPod touch last year and has been extremely well-received. In fact, it seems the developers did everything right, creating a near-flawless port that works well with touch and shake controls to provide a new and refreshing experience of a classic title. If you are as yet unfamiliar with the gameplay and objectives, they are fairly simple - help Lex the worm link letters together by swiping your finger across adjacent tiles and tapping to submit an accepted dictionary word. Obviously, the longer the word you form, the higher your score will be, and the faster you'll progress through the stages. To keep things interesting, there is a smattering of creative and challenging features interspersed throughout the game - this includes bonus words that give you extra points if you manage to form them (which are then categorized in the bonus book list under specifics like pets, clothing, colors, etc.) as well as the various special tiles you'll encounter in your word quest (green or gold tiles, for example, give your score a boost when used in a word, while red tiles burn up your entire library if you don't eliminate them by the time they fall to the bottom of the letter stack). Apart from that, you are also given the option to choose either Classic or Action mode, so no matter if you are a hardcore word game addict settling down for a long and hard challenge or a casual player looking for a quick and relaxing break, you will always find something that suits your preferences just right. Of course, because of the randomly generated grid arrangement, you might find yourself stuck at some point where you can't seem to form any word - even simple three-letter ones. The solution? Just shake your device to scramble the tiles and reveal new possibilies at the expense of several flaming hot red pieces. There's no doubt that this exciting and strategic word-forming hit will keep your brain cells working and sate your appetite for letters and puzzles, so we can definitely recommend that you add this great title to your library of games and burrow right in for just $ 2.99!
Suggestions for improvement: Online scoreboards and achievements would make great updates and encourage players to be competitive. Customization options for grid size and other aspects of the game would also help keep things manageable, provided there are no difficulty modes.
