Review: Thumpies

Category: Games
Seller:
Big Blue Bubble Inc.
Price: $ 2.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 3.1 or later
Version: 1.0

What's good: Are you tired of rhythm games that make use of the same old tap tap concept, with little change in visuals and art style? Well, thanks to Big Blue Bubble's truly innovative creative team, a new and very original music game has just thumped onto the AppStore and, we think, easily bests similar apps. Introducing Thumpies, an enchanting and excellentlly conceptualized aural and visual delight that's wrapped in a beautiful and mysterious woodland theme. In this game, you will work with a series of odd-ball characters that are essentially furry little round creatures with slightly creepy faces to make original music right from the palm of your hand. The gameplay mechanic is actually very simple, basically involving tapping at mushroom pads on the screen at the exact moment that a Thumpie falls from the sky to land on one. By doing so, you are sounding out notes that complete part of the track, and as each segment is successfully executed (which is done by filling the meter at the top of the screen), it will loop in the background while you aim to reproduce yet another layer in the soundtrack. As you get further along the game more Thumpies will come and bounce around at a time, each following its own musical pattern that, as we mentioned earlier, contributes to the whole score. Employ your rhythm and coordination skills to hit the notes perfectly each time, all while trying to catch fluttering butterflies that will allow you to unlock more bizzare Thumpie characters to enjoy. With every finished level, you also unlock richer and more complex soundtracks that will take not just one, but two (or even more fingers if you can spare them) to get through. Everything - from the unique and thoroughly challenging gameplay to the somewhat eerie yet magical elements rendered in rich and colorful graphics, to smooth and intuitive controls as well as wonderful sounds that enhance and solidify the feel of the game - ties up together perfectly to make for an engrossing and magical experience perfect for young and old alike. Both casual and hardcore players, too, will find that the three difficulty levels (per stage) make for challenging yet manageable gameplay for all types of gamers. If you want a different kind of music experience, don't look any further than this app - it was definitely built to be admired and enjoyed.

Suggestions for improvement: Online leaderboards would be great to share scores and unlock achievements.
We'd also love to be able to play back the soundtracks we've completed without having to replay the game - the songs are so unique that we feel it is a necessity to add this feature in the next update.

Review: 1000 - Find 'Em All!

Posted by App-reciation Reviews on February 25, 2010 , under , | comments (1)

Category: Games
Price: $ 2.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 2.2.1 or later
Version: 1.1

What's good: Get ready for one of the biggest treasure hunts of your life with Glu Mobile's revolutionary new search-and-collect game, 1000: Find 'Em All! The choice of name does give you an idea of what this app has to offer, but in fact there is so much more to this title than just looking for objects on your iPhone. To start things off, it should be clear that this app plays nothing like the all-too-familiar hidden object games. Instead, you are a little boy placed in a big and colorless world which you have to explore to discover collectibles. Find colorful wrapped packages scattered around the map, and along the way, give life to the world and make things beautiful again. Cross bridges, run mazes, knock on houses, open mailboxes and treasure chests, prod chickens and crabs, look inside shrubs and in between tree branches, smash hard pieces of uncut crystals, and scatter wisps of dandelion to the winds in the hopes of finding hidden presents. There are also several that are just waiting in the middle of the green fields or sitting in plain view on sandy shores, so be sure to grab those, too. Obviously, the goal is to collect a whopping one thousand items, every hundred of which fall into different categories like people, clothing, animals, legendary, big, and obscure. And like we mentioned earlier, it isn't all about searching on your game map, either. Rather, the app makes use of Google Maps and GPS to open up a whole world of possibility to players. Not limited by the parameters of the virtual world, you can instead go out into the real world and physically make yourself present wherever your screen shows gift items located in order to claim them. Apart from that, search out Gifters hanging out in public places and populated cities near where you are, and pay them a visit too because they'll help you grow your collection. Slowly fill in your gift journal as you go on an adventure that blurs the lines between virtual and real life in this truly amazing app. You'll also find yourself smiling or laughing at the random assortment of odd and sometimes completely useless things that you'll uncover, ranging from a cup of elephant dung coffee and a dubious man in a black coat to prefabulated amulite (we didn't even know what that was until now) and a sea sponge's autograph. Now if that doesn't sound like it's worth $ 2.99, then we really don't know what is!

Suggestions for improvement: The map is lovely and we really enjoy exploring it, but we feel that at times it gets a little lonely with virtually no other characters for company except for a few animals and the occasional Wanderer. It would be nice if the game world was more interactive. Other ideas for an update - top collectors (global) and mini missions that unlock more collectibles.

Review: Plants vs. Zombies

Posted by App-reciation Reviews on February 22, 2010 , under , | comments (0)

Category: Games

Price: $ 2.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 2.2.1 or later
Version: 1.0

What's good: After being joyfully anticipated by their legions of fans for quite some time, PopCap Games' hit PC game Plants vs. Zombies has finally come to the iPhone and iPod touch! A tower defense, strategy, and time management mega combo, this insanely fun and addicting title takes place in perhaps one of the most common settings in the world - your house. But when its about to be invaded by a swarm of hungry zombies and you have nothing to defend with, you'll start getting creative and look to your only hope - an arsenal of plants - to spare you the gruesome death of getting your brains devoured. It's a good thing the undead are infernally slow-moving creatures, because that gives you several minutes to plan(t) your defense lines before they break down your flimsy door. Get your shovel ready, dig up some dirt, and get those greens up across your lawn to start a revolution! Each level gives you a limited number of seed slots, so choose your plants carefully. Pick sun-giving plants to give you the sunlight needed to grow your war garden; peashooters, cabbage or watermelon catapults, purple fume shooters, cattails on lily pads, explosive cherry bombs and potato mines, or spiky cactus stumps to form an offensive front; tough seeds, leafy greens, and dangerously sharp spikes for a solid defense; as well as a handful of other unique and creatively imagined plants like grave busters, hypnotic or magnetic shrooms, blower clovers, and flaming torchwood. Every level brings a huge variety of zombies to match your ever-growing range of flowers and greenery, from metal-bucket capped, pogo-jumping, dolphin-riding zombies to football playing, screen-door shielding, and even Thriller-dancing crews of undead. Of course, they aren't very smart, but watch out for changes of tactic as they try to come at you from your front yard, backyard, and rooftop - both during the day and night and sometimes even in foggy conditions. Each new scenario requires a slight shift in strategy, but every win unlocks a new plant and gives you access to the informative (and rather hilarious) plant and zombie almanac as well as Crazy Dave's shop, where you purchase special plant upgrades and other goodies like extra seed slots and garden rakes. Prove your horticulture prowess and earn badges for impressive achievements such as completing a night level without using any mushrooms, discovering the elusive Yeti zombie, and collecting all 49 plants. With over fifty levels, tons of unlockables, gorgeous cartoon graphics, and whimsical soundtracks, there is absolutely no doubt that no matter what kind of gamer you are, you will dig this unique game - if not from the onset, it'll definitely grow on you soon enough.

Suggestions for improvement: As long-time fans of the PC version, we really would love to see the Zen Garden and other game modes integrated into the iPhone version. Adding a social gaming platform like Open Feint for achievements and high scores could likewise be a good idea.

Review: Farm Frenzy 2

Posted by App-reciation Reviews on February 16, 2010 , under , | comments (0)

Category: Games

Price: $ 2.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 3.0 or later
Version: 1.1

What's good: Following the huge success of PC-turned-iPhone-app Farm Frenzy, Alawar Entertainment set out to develop a bigger and better title that retains all the goodness of the original and expands into a more polished and infinitely more challenging game. In this excellent sequel, you step into the role of farm manager once again and set out to successfully run the land that's been left in your care. The basic process is similar to the first, but with some slight changes. Instead of geese, for example, you need to buy chickens that cluck and peck on the screen, eating patches of green grass that you tap to plant on soil that needs to be irrigated periodically. These hens will then lay eggs which you can either load onto your cargo truck and sell at the market or keep to process into more refined foods like egg solids and pies. As you progress through levels, you will soon be able to buy larger and more costly animals like pigs and cows, which in return give you meat and other products of substantially higher value. If sometimes you find that you lack a key ingredient for a new product, you simply need to deploy your small plane to the market to fetch as many of it as you want - provided you have the means to do so. Of course, things really get hectic after a while, what with having to carefully oversee the entire buying-feeding-collecting-processing-reprocessing-storing-selling cycle AND remembering to catch bears that occasionally drop by looking to make a quick meal of your livestock. What's more, every level gives you a different mission to undertake - whether to have a specific number of animals on hand, produce a certain volume of food, accumulate a set amount of coins, or a combination of the three. Upon completion, you will earn credits that you can use for machine and other upgrades at the store - purchasing a more spacious warehouse, a faster truck or plane, a more efficient processing plant or water system, or an improved cage to catch predators faster will really help you get those coveted gold medals that seem downright impossible to get on your first few tries. Play well enough and you even stand a chance to earn a variety of shiny trophies - for achievements that range from finishing the game to making record time to keeping all animals unharmed after several stages. All this is set in a detailed rural world full of vibrant color and fun, old-fashioned sounds that wraps up the entire experience beautifully, making for an app we can highly recommend to all fans of time management games.

Suggestions for improvement: There should be more helpful instructions since the game basically leaves you to your own devices without ever explaining things like having to buy things you can't produce on your own from the market. Other than that, this is one exciting and enjoyable game we find very hard to put down.

Review: Battle of Puppets

Posted by App-reciation Reviews on February 7, 2010 , under , | comments (2)

Category: Games
Seller:
Small Wonders S.L.
Price: $ 1.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 3.0 or later
Version: 1.1

What's good: In the course of our as yet relatively short reviewing stint, we've seen so many tower defense games that very few have stood out from among the crowd. It takes a little imagination and a lot of passionate hard work to come up with a game that works, and the enthusiastic team at Little Wonders definitely have those qualities and more. We were delighted when we heard about their first AppStore game, and although we didn't expect to be completely blown away, that's exactly what Battle of Puppets succeeded in doing. There are various elements that come together to make it the truly spectacular app that it is: the first thing that holds your attention on launching the app is the whimsical puppet-play-on-stage theme - complete with stunning pieces drawn on cardboard, animations that perfectly mimic the nuances of slightly stiff puppet moves, and fun, trippy sounds that will further immerse you into the stage environment. As you step into your role as puppeteer, you'll have the option to pick from five different opera types and their corresponding puppet army - Madame Butterfly, for example, features an oriental crew of ninjas and shoguns that thrive in cold weather, while the Norse mythology inspired Valkiria brings an army of Vikings and their powerful god Thor to wreak destruction on their adversary. Each one is based on popular real-life plays and comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, so no matter which you choose, a successful act really depends on the tactical skill of the puppet master (that's you), the scenario in which your performance takes place, and the strengths and weaknesses of your enemies. In a flawless combination of tower defense mechanics and the puppet theme, you send off your troops from your side of the screen by clicking on available units from your tower. Once created, they will automatically walk the length of the stage and fight whatever opposing force they encounter along the way, capturing flags at certain points to mark their territory. Every second your creations spend in the limelight is an additional point to your score as well as extra income for you to spend on tower upgrades and new units, but apart from that, there are certain special moves you can make to boost the capacity of your forces. Manipulate the circumstances with just a few swipes of your finger and perform feats like freezing the enemy or supercharging your puppets that will surely earn you a standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience. Conduct a successful performance and win the applause and admiration of spectators, or put on a lousy show and get booed off the stage. For just $ 1.99, get your act together and find out if you have what it takes to be master puppeteer!

Suggestions for improvement: It would be great if players had greater control of their puppets. The option to move your puppets where you want them, for example, would be helpful in case you need to retreat. We'd love to see more maps as well!

Review: Hangman RSS

Category: Games
Seller:
Finger Arts
Price: $ 0.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 2.2.1 or later
Version: 1.0

What's good: From the innovative creators of the well-received word game Guess the News comes yet another unique app for your iPhone or iPod touch! Picking up where they first left off, Finger Arts expanded on their feed-integrated news-guessing idea and added the challenge of classic hangman to come up with Hangman RSS, a fun and challenging game that's 'for the brave only.' Naturally, it's a lot harder than their first title, because the concept of Hangman is by nature rather unforgiving - or at least, limits your tries to the six strokes it takes to draw a stick figure of a man on the gallows. Apart from this major difference, the animations, sound effects, as well as the overall feel and polish are reminiscent of its predecessor. As you might already know, you first need to connect to the internet to get news and headlines. Once you've loaded a few articles, you can choose a difficulty mode (medium and difficult levels are locked at first) whereupon you're whisked off to a crisp and nicely laid out game screen - there's part of the article's title at the top of the page, a small hand-drawn gallows ready for its victim in the center, and tiles of the alphabet lined up from A-Z as well as a snippet of the news to be guessed at the bottom. The gameplay itself is very similar to Wheel of Fortune, but instead of voicing out your choice of letters, you tap on your iPhone or iPod touch instead. Use your knowledge of current events to win rounds as fast as you can, and remember, every wrong letter is one step closer to game over. Keep a continuous streak of wins to unlock achievements and new modes, rack up OpenFeint points, and share results with your friends! With a little luck and news savvy, you'll find yourself speeding through difficult rounds - a smile on your face and a spring in your finger tap. For just $ 0.99, get limitless hours of fun that flawlessly combines casual gaming with interesting and relevant world information plus the best hangman ever - all in one package. You'll never be bored again!

Suggestions for improvement: We thought that being able to select articles by category was one of the best things about Guess the News, and we'd really love to see that feature integrated into Hangman RSS!

Review: Trenches

Posted by App-reciation Reviews on February 2, 2010 , under , | comments (0)

Category: Games

Price: $ 1.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 3.0 or later
Version: 1.2.5

What's good: If you enjoy TD games as much as we do, then you can't possibly miss out on one of the top contenders in a crowded genre. Widely acclaimed as one of the best games of 2009, Trenches by Thunder Game Works is an excellent combination of tower defense, strategy, and line-drawing. This 2D side scroller is set in an environment that emulates the look and feel of the dark battlegrounds of bygone war times, with a single main element that makes it unique from all the rest - the trenches. Basically, you start at the left side of the screen and make your way through the field to the right end where you then proceed to bomb the enemy spawn point located there. The path to that destination, while relatively short, is riddled with enemy troops and spells danger for yours. Plan carefully, take shelter in dugouts and trenches along the way where your men will mostly be immune to small arms fire, and use your resources to buy different types of soldiers and artillery - new options become available as you progress in the game and provide very different offensive capabilities, which means that your success is directly affected by your choice of upgrades as well as when and where you deploy which kinds of troops. Far from being the usual defense game you play, however, this title requires the mind of a true strategist - one who is always thinking ahead and evolving with the enemy's every tactic. If you stick to a handful of your tried-and-true moves, you will soon be unable to declare any victories. How come? Because the developers, in a stroke of pure brilliance, have integrated an adaptive artificial intelligence system that finds counter-measures to players' most common maneuvers, meaning you will need to outsmart the computer as it constantly tries to outsmart you! This certainly makes the game that much more challenging, and it also ups the replay value to virtually infinite. Add to these impressive features the immaculate rendering of the cartoon-style artwork and soundtrack, the character detail and humorous animations (we especially love how severed body parts fly through the air when bombed), the smooth and intuitive controls that make truly good use of the iPhone's touch screen and accelerometer, various difficulty tiers and two game modes to cater to individual preferences and skill, and the World War theme that has been consistent throughout the game - woven into everything from the storyline to the smallest triviality, well, there's really not much else you can ask for, is there?

Suggestions for improvement: After a great update and promise of a multiplayer mode, the only things we can suggest are to add more unit types (medics, for example), give players an option to advance only troops of the same type, and perhaps tweak the difficulty a little bit since the game may be far too hard to complete at this point, especially for casual gamers.

Review: Alley Gator

Posted by App-reciation Reviews on January 30, 2010 , under , | comments (0)

Category: Games

Price: $ 0.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 2.2.1 or later
Version: 1.0.1

What's good: As one of the explosively popular apps industry's leading quality game developers, Glu Mobile never fails to deliver. From the time Apple first opened up its AppStore to third-party applications, a wide and diverse array of chart-topping and best-selling games has continuously been published under their expert guidance. These range from sports-related titles and music beat generators to pick-up-and-play casual games and now, to start off 2010 with a splash, Alley Gator - the newest in their product lineup - glides onto iTunes. In this insanely fun and fast-paced game, you play Alley, an alligator on a mission to swim through the sewer tunnels of New York City in a wild race against the ticking clock. Make your way through seven distinct water alleys set in rich cylindrical 3D environments like corridors of graffitied bricks, mazes of wild underground greenery, and cool stone passageways (the game adds a whole new layer of zig-zagging fun by allowing you to tilt a complete 360 through it all). As you slide through the twisting and turning courses, tilt your device to collect red peppers, green 'invulnerability' potions, and time-freezing stopwatches. Remember to defly maneuver your way through pipes, half-closed steel filters, and various discarded junk items like tires and old television sets. To add to the challenge, you also need to watch out for creatures that lurk beneath the depths. Sound fun? You bet it is. In fact, sometimes you might just find yourself having too much fun going a hundred miles an hour, but if at any point you realize that you're moving at an unreasonably dizzying speed, simply tap the screen to slow down. A less than ideal way to go back to a relatively idling pace is, naturally, to hit an obstacle, but you should never crawl too slowly because you're only given a minute (and even less time as you progress) to complete an entire level. Before you know it, you'll have breezed through all twenty five levels, at which point you can either replay to get all the collectibles or try to beat your previous time record. Whatever the case, one thing's for sure - you won't be able to stop playing!

Suggestions for improvement: Alley Gator is so fast-paced it feels like the game was made to last only minutes! We really hope to see more levels, more collectibles, new settings and maybe features like racing against (either computer or human) opponent(s).

Review: Momento

Category: Lifestyle
Seller:
d3i
Price: $ 2.99
Requirements: iPhone or iPod touch, OS 3.0 or later
Version: 1.0.3

What's good: Since a thousand years ago, there have been records of diaries, memoirs, and other personal accounts that disclose man's consistent need to chronicle their thoughts, ideas, and daily lives. As the world progressed and changed, the instrument for jotting down these instances likewise evolved - from tree bark and parchment, to bound books and diaries, and finally to computers, handheld devices, and now the iPhone. It isn't the first time our shiny Apple devices have seen an application for this purpose, but d3i's simple yet beautiful and feature-packed virtual journal definitely tops the list. Aptly called Momento, it revolves around the concept of creating 'moments' throughout the day, which are saved in crisp pages and organized by date. There are a host of useful features - such as the ability to tag places, events, and people, add pictures, rate your posts, passcode protec private notes, and import feeds from four of the most popular social sites (including Facebook and Twitter, of course) - that really color up the experience of diary writing. You can also switch to calendar view to see your entries by month like you would in the built-in iPhone calendar app. From the streamlined interface and overall polish down to the smallest detail, it's apparent that this application was built for convenience, creativity, and organization. An inspired and inspiring app, to say the least, and one that imbues an atmosphere of reflection and reminiscing so you can create a meaningful timeline of your personal experiences and remember the instances in your life that matter.

Suggestions for improvement: It would be perfect if font styles and voice notes (memos or snippets of a song, for example) could be integrated into this application.
