What's good: Guess the News is an incredibly creative and unexpectedly engaging word game that uses real news from around the world to bring players a refreshing new app. The idea might not sound very exciting at the onset, but once you start playing, you'll see why this innovative title's been getting rave reviews from the iPhone media. When you launch the game, you have to connect to the internet at least once to get news and headlines - these are integral to the entire set-up, as is made obvious by the title. The app automatically sorts articles from a selection of popular news sources and files them into a variety of categories - this includes Top Stories, Entertainment, Technology, World, Finance, Sports, and a handful of others - each with an option to play in Timed or Classic Mode and with three levels of difficulty. Once you select your preferences, you're taken to the play screen where a jumble of letters are scattered in the middle and an incompletely formed headline adorns the top. Use your knowledge of daily goings-on in combination with the partially divulged article details at the bottom of the page to fill in the blanks, increase the score multiplier, and max out the percentage bar. Don't be too hasty, because every letter you assign to the wrong spot sets you back and makes it harder for you to pass the required percentage mark. On the other hand, you can't take too much time, either, since the multiplier gets lower as the seconds tick by. To earn a trophy or a medal for the mode you're playing, you need to successfully complete six rounds of increasingly difficulty, but if you're well versed in world affairs, have sharp eyes and quick fingers, have a penchant for guesswork, or possess a combination of any of those qualities, you'll definitely have no problem getting awards. All this makes for a perfectly addicting game with infinite replay value that not only keeps you highly entertained, but also provides you with the latest and most significant news headlines - that is, if you have an internet connection. As the app's tagline goes, "Don't just read the news, guess the news!" We heartily agree, because what could be better than having fun and being in the know at the same time?
Suggestions for improvement: Guess the News tends to pick the same stories from different news feeds and use these in sessions repeatedly, so that after a while it becomes all too easy to guess the news. The game also lacks integration with a social gaming platform - consider an update for players to be able to compare scores with the community, unlock achievements, and play against real opponents.
