What's good: One of the best loved classics of all time, Battleship, has just gotten a remake from Digital Chocolate and is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch as Pirate Ship Battles! In this exciting and action-packed adventure on the high seas, you'll initially assume the role of Pirate Prince, a man new to the pirate scene and eager to prove his skill. In order to do that, you will be assigned various missions that will take you through the Caribbean waters as you hunt for cities to defeat and control, pirates to war into submission, and fleets of pirate hunters to sink and destroy. All of these, naturally, require you to play the traditional Battleship game where you position whatever ships (or, in the case of cities, your towers) you have on the provided grids while your enemy on the other side does the same with his resources. Once things are in place, the fight begins! Fire your canon into the squares on his map without knowing his arrangement (likewise, your opponent does not know yours). To be successful, you'll need a combination of luck as well as employment of strategic attacks and placements, and then there are the special attacks that can really come in handy. These range from 'Fire Ship' which deploys a small flaming vessel that will run an entire column until it crashes into something, to 'Barbossa's Spyglass,' a useful tool that lets you see if enemy ships are stationed in particular grids. As you sail through rough challenges and battle-strewn missions, you'll amass gold coins from conquered islands that's necessary to buy more ships as well as form a formidable pirate crew comprised of your defeated enemies-turned-loyal-followers. Together, you will continue to hunt for more rogue pirates to add to your crew and lead you to the six missing map pieces that are needed to point the way to the fearsome Blackbeard's treasure. Of course, if you'd rather play a short game with the computer or with a human opponent, you can opt to play Quick Game or Hot Seat instead of Campaign. Whatever you choose, the randomly generated levels and engaging gameplay will surely keep you hooked for countless hours of swashbuckling fun. Get the game now for only $ 2.99 and hop aboard for an exhilarating ride!
Suggestions for improvement: Some of the controls are not as smooth as they could be. Getting to the edges of the battle grids can be a little frustrating as the screen keeps snapping back to a more centered view. Placing ships are likewise a little hard at times, especially with longer vessels and narrow spaces.
