What's good: The second book in Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson's hit gamebook series, Fighting Fantasy: Deathtrap Dungeon almost exactly follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, diverging only in its storyline. In this adventure, you are a fearless warrior who joins throngs of other brave-hearted men in an annually held contest that tests the skills, wits, and and courage of heroes from far and wide. For years, many have gone into the dangerous labyrinth filled with powerful creatures and strewn with deadly traps, hoping to emerge victorious and claim the prize of 10,000 gold coins as well as release the captive city of Chiang Mai from the horrors of the trial. None have succeeded, and it is up to you to prove that the evils lurking down in the dank and twisting dungeons can be defeated. To start your quest, you have to roll dice and determine your stamina, skill, and luck statistics - this will be the basis for all your fights and consequently affect all the outcomes. If you're lucky enough to get high numbers for all three, you will definitely proceed through the malicious hallways with more confidence. Otherwise, you will need a sizable amount of good fortune to weave through all the tricky situations by making right decisions at every turn - or at least, keeping yourself sufficiently out of harm's way before you get killed off by the enemy. Encounter all sorts of disconcerting dilemmas where you are forced to pick a path or action, then roll those treacherously unpredictable dice and cross your fingers at results. Along the way, collect weapons and items like swords and treasure, and piece together whatever clues you may come across to slowly bridge the distance between yourself and the exit. Make your solitary journey through this fantastic, magical world by flipping through the virtual pages of a deeply engrossing tale and immersing yourself in a story you will make your own! Suggestions for improvement: Although the game now comes with a rule book and the ability to skip page-flipping animations, we had hoped to see more interactivity and improvements from the first book. We're also still looking for an in-game map to make drawing our paths easier and more enjoyable.
